How to build a job portfolio in Ghana
Show a small number of real work examples, your role and a result without exposing private data.

A portfolio is not only for designers. It can help an applicant for research, administration, marketing, customer service, technical or graduate work show what they can actually do. The useful unit is one well-explained example, not a folder of every file you have touched. Choose work you are allowed to share and make it easy for a recruiter to understand the task, your contribution and the outcome.
Choose samples that answer the advert
Read the duties and select two to four examples that cover the strongest requirements. An administrator might show an anonymised process checklist; a data applicant could show a public dataset analysis with its method; a technician could show a documented fault-finding exercise; a graduate could show a final-year project. Avoid examples included only because they look impressive. If the employer cannot see how a sample relates to the vacancy, the portfolio becomes extra reading rather than evidence. Put the most relevant item first.
For each sample, write a short explanation: the problem, constraints, your specific action, tools, result and what you would improve. A group project needs a clear account of which part you owned. Do not imply that you led the whole project if you completed one section. If the result cannot be expressed as a number, describe the decision, deliverable or feedback it produced. Specificity is more credible than a vague claim that a project transformed an organisation.
Protect confidentiality and rights
Before uploading an employer document, ask whether you have permission. Remove names, phone numbers, identity numbers, financial details, internal plans and unpublished client information. Sometimes a written description or recreated example is safer than a screenshot. A research project may involve consent restrictions even when it was part of university study. If in doubt, ask your supervisor or use public material. Do not share a password-protected company file by changing its link settings without authorisation.
Credit collaborators and sources. If a designer made the visuals and you wrote the copy, say so. If you use a public dataset, link to its source and explain how you processed it. A professional portfolio should demonstrate judgment, including the judgment to keep sensitive information private. A recruiter who asks you to reveal confidential records from a prior employer is raising a concern about how it handles information. Offer an anonymised explanation of your method instead.
Make it easy to open on a phone
Use a simple page, PDF or folder with clear file names and brief descriptions. Test it on mobile data and in a private browser window. A login wall, broken permission or enormous file can prevent a recruiter from seeing excellent work. Put your name, role and contact route in an obvious place, but do not publish your full residential address or identity number. If a sample is a spreadsheet or code repository, add a short readme describing what to open first and what the output means.
Do not rely on external links alone. Save a copy of the main examples in case a platform changes. Check that fonts and diagrams remain legible when a PDF is viewed on a small screen. Use accessible headings and useful image descriptions so more people can review the work. If an advert requires a particular submission method, follow it; a separate portfolio link does not replace the requested CV or application form. Mention only the one or two samples most relevant to that role.
Use the portfolio in interviews and keep it current
Prepare a two-minute account of each sample. Explain one decision you made, an obstacle and how you checked the result. Be ready to identify what a colleague did. If the interviewer asks a detail you no longer remember, say what record you would consult rather than inventing an answer. After an interview, note which examples made the conversation easier and improve the descriptions for the next application. A portfolio is useful when it helps you tell a true, concise work story.
Update or remove outdated samples after a new project. Add dates so a recruiter can see which tools you used recently. Keep a version for each broad job type rather than sending every example to everyone. A candidate moving from an internship into a full role may replace a class exercise with supervised workplace evidence, if permitted. Workghana.net points to genuine employer application channels and does not charge to show your work. Never pay a stranger for a guaranteed portfolio review that promises a job.
Ask someone to review the evidence, not the decoration
Give a trusted colleague, lecturer or supervisor one vacancy and your portfolio link. Ask whether they can find the matching sample in a minute, understand your role and identify the result. If not, shorten the introduction or move the relevant item. Do not spend weeks polishing colours while examples remain vague. Replace claims such as strong problem solver with a specific decision, method and outcome that you can discuss in an interview.
Check permissions before every application. A link may work for you because you are signed in and fail for a recruiter. Review it privately on a phone, including image descriptions and file names. If the employer asks for an attachment rather than a link, create a concise PDF version. Keep the same factual account of the project across your CV, portfolio and interview. Trust grows when those records agree.

Frequently asked questions
How many work samples should I include?
Start with two to four relevant examples that you can explain well. Quality and clear ownership matter more than volume.
Can I show an employer’s internal report?
Only with proper permission. Otherwise use an anonymised description or a new example based on public information.
What if I have not had a job?
Use coursework, a volunteer task or a personal project, and be precise about your contribution and result.
