Finding software jobs in Ghana
Use a small verifiable portfolio and check whether the role is local, hybrid or genuinely remote.

Software vacancies in Ghana appear at telecom operators, banks, service companies, product firms and public projects. Their stack, employer and work arrangement differ. A role titled "developer" can involve maintenance, data engineering, customer integration or product design, so a list of languages alone will not show fit. Start with the original vacancy and a small portfolio you are allowed to share. This guide focuses on evidence, location, contract terms and fraud checks for local and remote software work.
Distinguish the actual software role
Read the tasks, not only the title or salary. A telecom operator such as MTN has a formal career route and a job applicant privacy notice; a bank may recruit technology staff under a group portal; an agency may recruit for a separate client. Ask who employs you and which team owns the system. A software engineer role might require production support or on-call duties, while a data role may focus on pipelines and quality. Do not assume a position is fully remote because the company operates across countries. Save the original role page and its location and work-arrangement wording.
Choose a specific software function from live adverts, such as frontend work, testing, data engineering or support tooling. For each vacancy, note the required stack and whether the employer accepts applicants based in Ghana. Build one small demonstration that you can explain: what failed, which test caught it, what you changed and how another person can run it. Remove customer data and secret keys before sharing a repository. A remote badge on an aggregator is insufficient; the employer must state its permitted work location and contracting terms. Review the actual application form for a portfolio field before writing a generic email.
Build a portfolio that proves reasoning
Show two or three projects with your own contribution, problem, architecture, tests and trade-offs. A small useful application with clear documentation can be stronger than many copied tutorials. If you worked on a team, specify your component and review process. Remove client secrets, personal data and proprietary code. State the exact degree or technical route if relevant; GTEC and CTVET help verify providers, but employers may also value demonstrable work. Map the vacancy's requirements to real examples: debugging, accessible interfaces, data validation or deployment. Do not claim a framework you touched once as a production skill.
Verify the employer and assessment
Use the company's own careers page or the verified ATS linked from it. A genuine software assessment should identify the employer, time expectation and submission route. Be cautious if a stranger asks you to install a remote-control tool, send repository credentials or pay for an assessment certificate. MTN's applicant notice shows that a real employer publishes data-handling information; a copied logo does not. Save a copy of the vacancy and review permissions before sharing code or personal data. For a remote role, confirm that Ghanaian residents are eligible and the advertised entity will contract and pay them.
Follow the method in the live vacancy. Copy the reference number accurately, send documents in the requested format and keep a confirmation. Some employers have group portals, public bodies have forms and small firms use verified email; one route cannot be assumed for all. A message that changes the application method or requests money should be checked through an independently found employer contact. Workghana.net links to the original source and charges no applicant fee. Do not send a Ghana Card image or bank details to an unverified message account.
Read the engineering and pay conditions
Ask about the legal employer, currency, pay cycle, tax responsibility, equipment, internet support, security, on-call rota, time zone and contract duration. A global remote job may be a contractor agreement rather than Ghanaian employment. Ghana's PAYE guidance applies to relevant domestic employment, but the specific arrangement should be checked rather than inferred from a job title. A high gross amount can come with equipment costs and no paid leave. Compare written terms before leaving a stable job. Clarify intellectual property, access to production systems and what happens if the project ends.
Before accepting, ask for the legal employer, duty station, basic pay, allowances, hours, contract length, probation, supervision and any tools or travel you must provide. Ask which terms are in writing and read them before resigning from another role. Ghana's Labour Act is the employment framework, but the individual offer determines many practical details. A famous client name may not be the entity that pays a contractor. Compare take-home value and predictable costs, including late transport and equipment, rather than choosing only the highest headline figure.
Keep skills linked to production outcomes
After starting, document work that can be discussed without exposing code or customer information: tests added, bugs resolved, response times measured or handovers improved. Ask for review feedback and learn the team's quality and security practices. A next role may require a different stack, but disciplined engineering transfers. If you are not getting interviews, compare your portfolio to the role's main tasks and improve one relevant project. If interviews fail, practise explaining decisions and limits rather than collecting another broad certificate. Follow real employer portals on a schedule and remove stale roles from your tracker.
Build a record of work you can lawfully discuss: tasks, tools, checks, outcomes and who supervised you. Ask for feedback early and identify the next actual role rather than buying an unrelated certificate. If applications are not leading to interviews, review whether you met the core criteria and whether your first CV examples show them. If interviews fail, practise explaining your own contribution and limits. A career path is built through verified experience and current openings; a training programme, database profile or positive conversation is not itself an offer.
