Finding teaching jobs in Ghana

Use the current GES route for public schools and verify private-school employers separately.

Teaching vacancies in Ghana can come from the Ghana Education Service, private schools, tertiary institutions or project programmes. Their qualification rules, employer, application system and location differ. Government reporting describes teacher recruitment, but an announcement from a previous intake is not permission to apply today. A private school may recruit directly and have different terms. This guide helps you verify the current route and present evidence of teaching practice without confusing registration, posting and a job offer.

Separate public and private recruitment

For a public teaching application, follow the current notice issued by the responsible education authority and its eligibility and portal instructions. The National Teaching Council separately explains professional registration and licensing. Do not reuse a link to an earlier intake without checking dates. Private schools and higher-education institutions have their own employers; confirm the school's legal name, campus and job description. A school logo on a forwarded poster is not a current vacancy. If a recruiter claims a guaranteed public-school posting for cash, verify through the responsible authority using independently found contact details. Keep the original advert, reference and closing date for every application.

Separate your search into public schools, private schools and tertiary institutions before preparing documents. For a public post, record the specific intake and application route; for a private school, identify the headteacher or hiring body and the actual campus. A subject teacher should map their qualification to the level and subject requested, then prepare one short example of teaching and assessment for that age group. If you taught during supervised practice, name the host and dates, and explain what feedback changed. A familiar school crest on a forwarded image does not establish that the school issued the vacancy.

Show classroom competence rather than a generic passion

State the exact teaching qualification, subject, level, practice placement and any registration status required by the specific vacancy. GTEC can help verify tertiary credentials. Use examples of lesson planning, assessment, support for different learners and communication with families without revealing student details. A recent graduate can describe supervised practice: the class level, objective, what they taught, how they checked understanding and what feedback changed. An experienced teacher should show a real improvement they can substantiate. Do not claim a subject or grade range you have not taught merely because a school is urgently hiring.

Follow the notice and prepare for selection

Public recruitment may require exact documentation and posting choices; private schools may ask for a demonstration lesson or interview. Read the current instructions rather than copying a neighbour's form. Prepare a short lesson that suits the stated age group and curriculum, with a way to check learning. Carry the original documents the employer requests through a secure process; do not send them to a personal number from a poster. The Ghana Cyber Security Authority advises checking job advertisements against official channels; a placement-fee demand is a warning sign. A demand for a placement fee is a reason to stop and verify through an official contact.

Follow the method in the live vacancy. Copy the reference number accurately, send documents in the requested format and keep a confirmation. Some employers have group portals, public bodies have forms and small firms use verified email; one route cannot be assumed for all. A message that changes the application method or requests money should be checked through an independently found employer contact. Workghana.net links to the original source and charges no applicant fee. Do not send a Ghana Card image or bank details to an unverified message account.

Read the timetable, school and contract

Ask for the school location, class load, planning time, extracurricular expectations, salary, payment dates, leave, probation and contract period in writing. A job in a region may not specify the actual school until deployment; ask when it will be confirmed. A private school may expect weekend activities or boarding duties. Ghana's Labour Act is a framework, but the individual terms must be checked. If an agency presents the role, find out who employs and pays you. Do not resign on the basis of a verbal promise of a preferred district.

Before accepting, ask for the legal employer, duty station, basic pay, allowances, hours, contract length, probation, supervision and any tools or travel you must provide. Ask which terms are in writing and read them before resigning from another role. Ghana's Labour Act is the employment framework, but the individual offer determines many practical details. A famous client name may not be the entity that pays a contractor. Compare take-home value and predictable costs, including late transport and equipment, rather than choosing only the highest headline figure.

Build professional evidence safely

Keep lesson plans and anonymised examples that show your method, not identifiable student records. Ask for observation feedback and note what changed in your teaching. Training should address a real gap such as assessment, inclusive practice or a subject update, not a paid certificate that promises a posting. Use current official education notices to check opportunities and the National Teaching Council to check professional requirements. A good record of classes, supervision and results can support a future application to a different school, but it should be accurate and respectful of pupils' privacy.

Build a record of work you can lawfully discuss: tasks, tools, checks, outcomes and who supervised you. Ask for feedback early and identify the next actual role rather than buying an unrelated certificate. If applications are not leading to interviews, review whether you met the core criteria and whether your first CV examples show them. If interviews fail, practise explaining your own contribution and limits. A career path is built through verified experience and current openings; a training programme, database profile or positive conversation is not itself an offer.
