Work permits and job applications in Ghana
Check the correct immigration authorisation before accepting work as a foreign national.

A foreign national considering a job in Ghana needs two separate things: a genuine employer offer and the right authorisation to work. A residence or visitor document alone may not permit employment. The Ghana Immigration Service publishes permit guidance and forms, but the correct route depends on the individual, employer and activity. This guide helps candidates ask the right questions early and avoid a recruiter who promises that payment to a personal account will make paperwork disappear.
Separate an employer offer from permission to work
The Ghana Immigration Service explains that a residence permit does not automatically authorise work unless that authorisation is specified. It lists work-permit routes and forms. A company may be willing to hire you but unable or unwilling to support the necessary process. Ask at the first serious interview which legal entity would employ you, what work authorisation it expects and who will handle the application. Do not start paid work on the assumption that a visitor stamp is enough. Rules and fees can change, so read the current GIS guidance and seek case-specific advice rather than relying on a forum answer.
Before accepting a cross-border offer, identify the actual employer, worksite, occupation and immigration route it expects to sponsor or support. A business visit, an application in progress and permission to begin paid work are different states. Ask the employer which official forms it uses, what it will submit and when you may lawfully start. Keep written copies of the offer and communications. If an intermediary promises a permit for a personal transfer, check the Ghana Immigration Service's official route instead. A remote contract with a foreign organisation also deserves a separate check of location eligibility and tax treatment; do not assume the word remote removes local rules.
Check the route against the actual role
GIS lists different work-permit categories and asks for employer and applicant documents. The route may vary for an investment-linked quota, a free-zone employer or another employment arrangement. Confirm whether the vacancy is in Ghana, remote from another country or requires travel. A remote employer's label does not determine immigration status if you physically work in Ghana. Give your true nationality, status and intended duties to the employer and the competent authority. Keep a record of the official instructions used. Do not ask a recruiter to describe you under a different role to bypass eligibility.
Verify who handles documents and payment
The employer or authorised representative should explain the process, required documents and official payment route. GIS publishes forms and current fees; do not trust an image of a fee schedule sent by an unknown person. A scammer may combine a real vacancy with a fake permit charge. Contact the employer and GIS through independently found details. Do not send your passport image to a personal account before you know who is processing it and why. Workghana.net is free for applicants; payment to our site is never needed to apply.
Follow the method in the live vacancy. Copy the reference number accurately, send documents in the requested format and keep a confirmation. Some employers have group portals, public bodies have forms and small firms use verified email; one route cannot be assumed for all. A message that changes the application method or requests money should be checked through an independently found employer contact. Workghana.net links to the original source and charges no applicant fee. Do not send a Ghana Card image or bank details to an unverified message account.
Make the contract conditional on lawful start
Ask for the legal employer, salary, duties, location, contract term, probation, travel and who pays legitimate permit costs in writing. Clarify whether work begins only after authorisation and what happens if approval is delayed or refused. Ghana's Labour Act may frame an employment relationship, but immigration compliance is separate. Do not resign, relocate or book long-term housing solely on a verbal assurance that a permit is certain. An adviser can help with a complicated case, but the official GIS route is the primary source for requirements.
Before accepting, ask for the legal employer, duty station, basic pay, allowances, hours, contract length, probation, supervision and any tools or travel you must provide. Ask which terms are in writing and read them before resigning from another role. Ghana's Labour Act is the employment framework, but the individual offer determines many practical details. A famous client name may not be the entity that pays a contractor. Compare take-home value and predictable costs, including late transport and equipment, rather than choosing only the highest headline figure.
Keep status and role changes current
Once authorised, track the validity, employer and activities covered. A change of employer, duties or residence may require a new step; ask GIS or qualified counsel before assuming an old approval transfers. Keep copies of the permit and employer correspondence securely. A legal start supports later applications and protects both worker and employer. If an application fails, ask for the official reason and address it rather than paying someone who promises a shortcut. This guide is general information; the actual permit decision belongs to the competent authority for your facts.
Build a record of work you can lawfully discuss: tasks, tools, checks, outcomes and who supervised you. Ask for feedback early and identify the next actual role rather than buying an unrelated certificate. If applications are not leading to interviews, review whether you met the core criteria and whether your first CV examples show them. If interviews fail, practise explaining your own contribution and limits. A career path is built through verified experience and current openings; a training programme, database profile or positive conversation is not itself an offer.

Frequently asked questions
Does residence alone let me work?
Not automatically. GIS says authorisation to work must be specified.
Can an employer guarantee a permit?
No. The competent authority decides; request the official route and written terms.
Should I pay a recruiter personally for a permit?
Use only a verified official or authorised process and independently confirm the charge.
Can I change employers on the same authorisation?
Check the permit conditions and ask GIS before assuming it transfers.
