Police clearance for a job application in Ghana
Use the Ghana Police Service's own route and confirm which document the employer needs.

Some Ghanaian employers ask for a police clearance or related vetting before final selection. The request may be legitimate, but not every vacancy needs the same check and a message from an unknown recruiter is not enough. The Ghana Police Service publishes its own list of services and official payment information. Before applying, establish the purpose, timing and type of document with the real employer. This guide helps you avoid paying an intermediary for a certificate that may be unnecessary or fraudulent.
Ask the employer what check is required
A police clearance is not a generic CV attachment for all jobs. Ask whether the employer needs a resident clearance, employment vetting, document authentication or another service, and at what stage. The Ghana Police Service's paid-services page distinguishes these items and describes the access points. Do not assume that a certificate obtained for travel has the same purpose as employment vetting. Read the employer's written instruction and ask which office or application route it recognises.
Check the vacancy first. Does the role involve access to sensitive records, vulnerable people, cash or a regulated environment? That may explain the request, but you still need the precise document. A recruiter may copy a real requirement into a fake advert. Confirm the role on the employer's own website or with a number from that site. Do not share a police document publicly to show you are trustworthy. It contains personal information that should go only through a verified selection channel.
Use the police source rather than an agent
The Ghana Police Service publishes service names, locations and statutory fees. Check that page immediately before starting, as fees or procedures may change. If an official portal or office is directed by the police, follow it and keep the receipt. Avoid paying a person who claims to have a faster unofficial route or a special contact at the employer. A certificate obtained through a questionable channel may be invalid, and a fake provider may collect your identity documents.
Prepare the documents the actual police service requires for the category you need. Check spelling and identification details before submission. If an employer has offered to organise the check, ask whether you must attend, what information will be shared and whether any payment is your responsibility. Do not pay an employer-side recruiter into a private wallet because they say the police are waiting. A published official fee is different from paying for an interview or guaranteed placement. Workghana.net charges no fee to job seekers.
Time the request to a real selection stage
Applying for many roles does not mean obtaining a fresh clearance for every application. Ask a shortlisted employer when the document must be ready and whether an existing certificate is acceptable. The answer may vary by role or organisation. Do not invent a universal validity period. If an employer states a time limit, get it from the current written instruction and check the police route. A rushed promise from an intermediary should not set your timetable.
Keep the clearance in a private folder and a note of the issuing authority and date. Send a copy only through the verified employer channel. If you need to travel to an office, confirm the service location and opening information from the official police page. If a certificate is delayed, tell the employer truthfully and provide evidence of an official application if permitted. Do not alter an old document's date or upload a forged scan; the risk is greater than losing one vacancy.
Protect your information and follow up safely
A police check may involve fingerprints and identification. Share these only with the authorised service or a provider confirmed by the employer. Ask how a third-party check will be used and who can see the result. MTN Ghana's applicant notice illustrates that employers can collect sensitive recruitment information; each organisation should be judged by its own published notice and actual process. Never send a Ghana Card PIN and banking login together to someone who claims to be an investigator.
If you need to check status or correct a detail, use the police service's official contact or the channel printed on your receipt. Do not give your application number to strangers offering an update. An employer can ask for a clearance, but the job offer still needs written salary, work and employer details. Completing a check does not itself mean that you have been hired. Keep applying to other suitable openings until the real employer confirms an offer you can review.
Recognise a fake recruitment use of clearance
A scam may say you are hired immediately if you pay for police clearance through a link in a message. Compare the message with the employer's official vacancy and call its verified office. GNPC specifically warns that it does not request money from applicants through recruitment messages, and the Minerals Commission has warned of a fake job portal. Do not let urgency substitute for verification. A real employer should be able to state the role, selection stage and check provider without secrecy.
If the request is genuine, follow the published Ghana Police Service process and keep proof. If it is not, do not send more documents; report the suspicious contact through the employer or relevant police channel. The safe principle is simple: verify the job independently, identify the exact official service, and pay only any properly published government charge through its authorised route. Never pay a recruiter or Workghana.net for a job.
