Ghana Armed Forces recruitment requirements: age, height, grades and the official portal
The last published rules for recruits: 18 to 25, or up to 27 for tradesmen, unmarried, 1.68m for men and 1.57m for women, with six BECE credits and six WASSCE passes or a trade qualification. You apply only at apply.mil.gh.

To join the Ghana Armed Forces as a recruit, the last published rules ask you to be a Ghanaian citizen by birth, aged 18 to 25 or up to 27 for tradesmen, unmarried, at least 1.68m tall for men or 1.57m for women, with six BECE credits including English and Maths, plus six WASSCE passes or a GES trade qualification. You apply online at apply.mil.gh using an e-voucher from a designated post office. The ages are set for each advert, and we couldn't confirm dates for a new intake, so check the portal.
What are the requirements for recruits?
These come from the Armed Forces' own eligibility page, as it read on 2 November 2026. The age date on it is 30 December 2025, so they're the last published rules, not a promise about the next intake. The site's FAQ says age requirements depend on the advertisement.
- A Ghanaian citizen by birth, of good character.
- Age: at least 18, and not more than 25 for non-tradesmen or 27 for tradesmen, by 30 December 2025.
- Medically fit by Armed Forces standards.
- Not married and not bonded.
- Height: at least 1.68m (5ft 6in) for men and 1.57m (5ft 2in) for women.
- Military Police only: at least 1.75m (5ft 9in) for men and 1.70m (5ft 7in) for women.
- BECE: six credits, not less than Grade 6, including English and Maths.
- WASSCE: six passes. For the Army, up to D7 in English and Maths and four other passes. For the Navy and Air Force, C6 in all subjects. Or the required trade qualifications from GES at Intermediate or Advanced level.
Am I too old?
Work it out from the date on the page. The 2025 rule says not more than 25 by 30 December 2025. By our sum, that means a non-tradesman born on or after 31 December 1999 was still within it. For tradesmen, at 27, the date is 31 December 1997. To be at least 18, you had to be born on or before 30 December 2007.
A new advert will set a new date, so use this as a guide and read the next advert closely. We don't know of any exceptions, and nobody can buy you one.
How do I apply?
The site sets out four steps. Applications go through the online portal, and the voucher is what lets you start.
- Read the entry requirements for your category closely.
- Choose Apply Now and enter your card serial and PIN. Then select your arm of service, which is the Army, the Navy or the Air Force.
- Choose your branch, enter your personal and education details, and upload a passport-size picture of 200 x 180 pixels.
- Print the application summary. It shows your GAF ID number, so keep it safe.
How much is the e-voucher?
The FAQ on the official site says the electronic voucher costs GHS 200 and can be bought from designated post offices nationwide. That's the only payment we found stated. Buying one doesn't give you a place, and it isn't worth buying until an advert is open and you've checked that you meet the rules.
The Armed Forces also says this about agents, on the same site: there are no authorised middlemen, and the advertised vacancies aren't for sale. It says anyone posing as an agent will be prosecuted, and that people who deal with them do so at their own risk. Nobody should pay for a job. If a person offers you a place for money, walk away.
What happens after I apply, and when is the next intake?
Recruit training runs for six months and covers physical training, drill, skill at arms, navigation, watermanship, tactics and field craft. The site says it's physically and mentally demanding.
We couldn't confirm any dates for 2026 or 2027 on an official page. Press and social media posts carry dates, but we don't print them until the portal shows them. Check apply.mil.gh yourself. The Armed Forces lists +233 509 215 775 as its contact number on that site.
If you're a graduate looking at officer entry, the officer cadet portal has its own route, and the site says officer and specialist roles may need diplomas, degrees or professional certificates.
