Estimate, not tax or legal advice. Reviewed on 2 November 2026. Sources: Ghana Revenue Authority: Pay As You Earn, rates for 2026, Ghana Revenue Authority: Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2026 (Act 1178) notice, SSNIT: FAQs on the three-tier scheme, SSNIT: minimum and maximum insurable earnings for 2026.

Check that example yourself. On GHS 6,496.65, SSNIT is 357.32, which leaves 6,139.33 to tax. PAYE on that is 1,139.33, and you're left with exactly GHS 5,000.00. The tool rounds up to the next GHS 100, so the number you say aloud never leaves you short. At GHS 6,500 you'd take home about GHS 5,002.37.

How much gross do I need for the take-home I want?

Here are some answers, rounded up to the next GHS 100, for a resident employee with all pay as basic salary.

  • Take home GHS 1,000: ask for GHS 1,200
  • Take home GHS 2,000: ask for GHS 2,500
  • Take home GHS 3,000: ask for GHS 3,700
  • Take home GHS 6,000: ask for GHS 8,000
  • Take home GHS 10,000: ask for GHS 13,600
  • Take home GHS 18,000: ask for GHS 25,200

Should I give a net or a gross figure in an interview?

Say which one you mean. Adverts in Ghana sometimes quote net pay and sometimes basic pay, and the two can be thousands of cedis apart. GHS 6,000 net takes about GHS 7,908 gross, so an employer who hears 6,000 and thinks gross will offer you far less than you meant.

A clear way to say it: I'm looking for GHS 6,500 gross a month, which is about GHS 5,000 after SSNIT and PAYE.

Why doesn't this tool tell me what my job pays?

Because we won't guess. We have no official figure for what most private jobs in Ghana pay, and few adverts state pay at all. This tool starts from what you need to live on, which is a number you can defend. For public service pay, see our single spine page.

What should I add before I settle on a number?

Work out your monthly rent, transport to that workplace, food and what you send home. Then remember that allowances count as pay for PAYE. If the employer splits the offer into basic and allowances, SSNIT falls a little and your take-home rises a little, so ask for the split.

Questions people ask

How do I convert net salary to gross in Ghana?

Add back PAYE and the 5.5% SSNIT. Because the bands change as pay rises, the tool searches for the gross that gives your net, using GRA's bands from 1 September 2026.

Does my employer's 13% SSNIT come out of my gross?

No. The 13% is on top of your pay. Only your 5.5% comes out of what you earn.

Will the answer be right if part of my pay is an allowance?

It'll be close, and slightly high. SSNIT is on basic only, so a smaller basic means a little less SSNIT than the tool assumes.

Is this advice on what I should earn?

No. It's a sum from your own target, and an estimate, not tax advice.
